Why is the Bugatti Veyron so expensive?

I love cars, but I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to drop two million dollars on one. Why is is Bugatti Veyron so expensive? Is it just that if you offer an incredibly overpriced product, there will be people who buy it just to let everyone know that they can afford to blow through that much money on something, or is there something really intrinsically superior about that car?|||People have spent more money on cars that were far less capable because they're old and out of production vehicles with some sort of historical interest or racing history.

In the future I think people will keep the prices of the Veyron high because it's a unique low production vehicle the likes of which we may never see again. The vehicle is a benchmark of overkill and collectors love that sort of thing.

It's one of the most technologically sophisticated cars ever built: 16 cylinders, all wheel drive and horsepower into the four digits.....wonderfully absurd.|||It's a little of both. Many high end cars have a price point set in order to label where the car stands on the "supercar hierarchy" and the Veyron is supposed to be at the top.

As for intrinsic value- the R%26amp;D that went into making the world's fastest full production car is enormous. A car that runs on pump gas (as opposed to race gas), passes euro and US crash tests, has one of the most advanced motors ever built (W16, 4 turbos), and one of the most advanced aero kits (at least 4 parts of the car move to adjust to its speed and handling) costs tons of money. Just testing the vehicle required enormous amounts of cash as the car needed specially designed tires, huge tracks to test on, (You can't go 250mph just anywhere. you run out of road too fast.) That much composite and titanium isn't cheap either.

The list goes on and on.|||It's not overpriced based on the cost to build it, VW loses money on every one they sell. It is without a doubt the most high end car ever made.

VW plans to come out with more (less expensive) Bugatti models, this one was created to bring back the image from the old days of Bugatti being an ultra premium car, and I think they have succeeded there, but lets see how they follow it up before deciding whether this was a big expensive mistake or not.

My 2 cents|||It is just unreal man. It is just a pinnacle. It has a handmade W-16 engine.. That ISN'T Cheap to design. Keep in mind a lot of what you pay for when you buy a car is the design work. Engineers get paid A LOT. And almost everything on that car is hand assembled. The materials are just astronomically expensive. Watch the Top Gear on it you will understand.|||it used to be the fastest production car in the world but not anymore, now its the second fastest(fast is the ssc ultimate aero). its supposed to be very technologicaly advanced. and luxurious.

its basically a rich man's car. and its a supercar, you can't expect a supercar to be affordable.|||It is (was) fastest production car in the world. Only few hundreds were built (200), so its rare.

And yes, there are people like Tom Cruise who would blow that much for a car.
